Cyprus – an Island of Contrasts
Cyprus has become one of the favourite holiday destinations in Europe. With it’s southerly location, Cyprus tourist season is longer than Greece, Spain and Portugal, and even in winter the temperatures are similar to warm spring days in northern Europe, especially along the coastlines.
Larnaca on the south eastern side of the island is renowned for its sandy beaches and party nightlife at resorts such as Aya Napa. If you want something a little quieter, Protaras slightly to the north of Larnaca is a perfect family resort and great for scuba diving. The western side of Cyprus is more rugged, and offers outstanding scenery. Paphos is a quieter location than Larnaca, and is popular with divers, walkers and families rather than 18-30s.
You will probably need a rental car in Cyprus if you are going to visit the Troodos mountains, but at nearly 2km in height, watch out for snow in the winter months as the winter temperatures are similar to northern Europe due to the altitude. However, the temperature can rise by 15 degrees when you return to the coast.
